History

Upperchurch Drombane is located in the Slieve Felim Hills, where many archaeological sites of Tipperary can be found. Some of the earliest sites in the area date back to the early Bronze Age and Neolithic period, including Wedge tombs, Cist graves, Barrows, Standing Stones, and Fulacht Fias.

Wedge Tombs

Wedge Tombs

Wedge tombs are stone structures with increasing chambers that typically face southwest. Upperchurch boasts two examples of these archaeological sites, Graniera and Knockcurraghbola Commons.

Standing Stones

The age of standing stones in the Upperchurch locality is hard to determine. Some are found near or within bronze age monuments, while others are arranged in alignments with varying sizes and shapes.

Barrow For

Ring Barrows

Ring Barrows are a type of burial site consisting of a circular earthern bank surrounded by a fosse. They were commonly used for cremated burials and are classified into different varieties such as ring-barrows, bowl barrows, mound barrows and pond barrows.
